Nearly twenty-two years ago, I moved to Raleigh for college, not knowing that it would become home. As someone who has spent my entire adult life here, I have met some amazing people and had some life-changing experiences in this beautiful city. One of the main reasons I decided to stay here was the family-friendly amenities, not to mention, the great sense of community. I've seen Raleigh change a lot in the past couple of decades, but I have absolutely no regrets about making such a permanent change. If you’re thinking about growing your family and want more than just a place to live, Raleigh should definitely be at the top of your list. This vibrant, fast-growing (and I mean fast) city combines quality of life, economic opportunity, family-oriented accommodations and a culture of community in ways few other cities can match. Here’s why people are increasingly choosing Raleigh as the place to put down roots, raise their children and invest in community. Nationally Recognized Quality of Life Raleigh was recently ranked the #6 Best Place to Live in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report for 2025-2026. Not only does Raleigh have safe neighborhoods and lower crime rates than many similarly sized metros, but it also offers job security, shorter commuter times, accessible health care and abundant outdoor recreation, giving families comfort and peace of mind. This kind of environment helps children thrive socially, emotionally and physically. A Thriving Economy and Strong Job Market Raleigh’s economy continues to outperform many U.S. cities. It consistently ranks high due to job growth in tech, healthcare, biotech and education. Because of this, families can look forward to stable employment opportunities, stronger household incomes and the ability to balance professional and personal life. For many couples, this stability makes it easier to plan for children and secure family support services like doulas, child care, camps & extracurricular activities, and even higher education. Unmatched Work–Life Balance Last year, Raleigh ranked #4 nationally for work-life balance, highlighting its affordable cost of living, flexible work options (including remote and hybrid roles), and abundant green space per resident. For many parents, this balance is critical and means more meaningful family time, less stress during pregnancy and early parenthood and better integration of supportive services (like doulas, nannies and elder care for aging parents). High-Quality Schools and Education Families often cite education as a top priority and Raleigh does not disappoint. The Raleigh-Wake County area regularly ranks among the top cities in the nation for public school quality and overall education outcomes. Our strong education ecosystem boosts property values, attracts family-oriented communities and creates opportunities for children to excel from early learning through high school. Affordable Cost of Living Compared to Major Cities With an average of 50+ people moving to Raleigh each day, housing is always being developed. And while Raleigh’s housing market has grown, it still offers better affordability than many large U.S. metros like New York, D.C., or San Francisco, especially when you compare total living costs and quality of life. Currently, home prices in the Triangle area remain significantly lower than in larger coastal markets. Many families find that their quality of life improves as housing costs decrease relative to their income, leaving more money left for monthly expenses like childcare, groceries and activities. This affordability can also free up resources for important family-building expenses like savings & emergency funds, family enrichment activities and travel. Growing Healthcare Infrastructure Families with young children often prioritize access to strong pediatric and maternity care. Raleigh is part of the Research Triangle region, which is building North Carolina’s first standalone children’s hospital, a major development that will expand pediatric services and access for families. This kind of long-term health investment complements supportive services like prenatal and pediatric care, ensuring families have more options for comprehensive care. Family-Focused Neighborhoods for Every Stage of Life Whether you’re a first-time parent or planning your forever home, Raleigh and its surrounding suburbs offer diverse living options. Each of these areas has unique advantages while staying connected to Raleigh’s economic and cultural core.
A Community That Values Family Support Raleigh has developed a community culture centered on families that includes support networks for new parents, group activities, festivals & family events, robust parks, trails, outdoor spaces and countless family & parenting resources. Whether you’re seeking support for your first baby or enrolling children in after-school programs, Raleigh offers the social fabric that nurtures families, not just houses. Choosing where to raise your family is one of life’s biggest decisions. Raleigh stands out not just for its rankings and statistics, but for the real lived experiences of families like mine who move here seeking support, balance, community and opportunity. From economic stability and educational strength to outdoor living and family resources, Raleigh provides a foundation where children can flourish and parents can build the life they’ve always dreamed of. Want to learn more about Raleigh? Here are some interesting facts that just may persuade you to settle here sooner rather than later.

Welcoming a new baby is an exciting milestone—but for older siblings, it can be a mix of curiosity, excitement, confusion, and even jealousy. While your heart grows to accommodate another child, your firstborn (or older kids) may be trying to understand where they now fit in this changing family dynamic. Preparing siblings for the arrival of a new baby is essential in helping them feel included, secure, and loved.
Here’s how to help siblings transition smoothly into their new role: 1. Start the Conversation Early- Children thrive on routine and predictability. As soon as you’re comfortable sharing the news, begin age-appropriate conversations about the baby.
2. Involve Them in the Pregnancy- Giving children a role in the baby’s preparation helps them feel included and valued.
3. Validate Their Feelings- Not every child will be thrilled right away and that’s okay. They might feel anxious about losing attention or having to share their parents.
4. Read Together- Books can be powerful tools for helping younger kids understand what to expect. A few favorites include:
These stories normalize sibling experiences and create space for questions. 5. Practice Baby Care with Them- Role play can make the abstract idea of a baby more tangible.
6. Plan for Their Care During Labor- Talk about what will happen when it’s time for the baby to be born. Let them know:
This preparation helps reduce uncertainty and fear. 7. Make the First Meeting Special- The first impression matters. Plan the sibling introduction thoughtfully:
8. Give Them a Job- Assign a special “big sibling” job, like being the diaper fetcher, lullaby singer, or book reader. This gives them purpose and pride in their new role. 9. Schedule One-on-One Time- After the baby arrives, it’s easy for the older child to feel overlooked. Carve out intentional one-on-one time with them, even just 10 minutes a day, to remind them they’re still a priority. 10. Be Patient with Regressions- Your potty-trained preschooler might suddenly have accidents. Your independent child may become clingy. These are normal responses to a big life change. Offer reassurance and patience as they adjust. 11. Other Considerations- Speak with your older children about their birth. Allow them to ask questions and review your birth plan with them. You may also want to schedule maternity or newborn photos and allow them to celebrate their new role as a big sister/brother. When preparing for baby's arrival, you can have some fun in the kitchen. Let your children pick out some recipes for freezer meals and prepare them together. Lastly, plan a trip to take as a family before the new baby is born. Bringing a new baby into the family is a journey for everyone—not just parents. With preparation, empathy, and love, older siblings can feel secure and excited in their new role. Remember: the bond between siblings is one of the most lasting and meaningful relationships they will have. Your guidance helps lay the foundation for that connection to grow. Here are eight thoughtful gifts that go beyond the expected, each one tailored to help a mom or mom-to be feel loved, seen, and celebrated. 1. Brunch or Dinner – A Shared Experience: Let’s face it—moms are often the ones cooking and planning meals. Sometimes, the best gift for your mom isn’t something you wrap, it’s quality time. Treat your mom to a delicious brunch or dinner at her favorite spot (or cook her something special at home). It’s a simple gesture that says, “Let’s slow down and just enjoy each other’s company.” Pair it with a handwritten note, and you've got a moment she won’t forget. And if you're cooking, don't forget to take care of the cleanup too.

This week's guest blogger is wife, mom, educator and visionary, Elana Mason. She is one half of the photography team for Skye Mason Photography. I connected with Elana last year after following her and quickly becoming a fan of Skye Mason Photography's artistry. They are deeply family-oriented and have such an ability to capture the true essence and emotion of the moment for each of their clients. This is why they are my preferred local photographers. I'm excited to share more about Elana and her business in the interview below. 1. Tell me about yourself.
I'm a kind, patient, and outgoing person, blessed to share my life with my college sweetheart, Roderick, and our four incredible children. As an educator and co-owner of Skye Mason Photography, I find joy in nurturing young minds and capturing life's precious moments. My passion lies in building meaningful relationships and offering support to others, making a positive impact wherever I go. 2. How/why did you start Skye Mason Photography? Roderick and I started nearly seven years ago because, after our wedding, we realized the importance of quality photos. The person we hired was an amateur, which became our only regret from our big day. Had we been properly educated on the importance of hiring a professional, we definitely would have gone a different route. After this, we developed an appreciation for beautiful images and capturing moments that can never be replicated. Over time, we learned and practiced taking photos and developed Skye Mason Photography. Creating a company together has always been one of our many dreams, so we are fortunate that we have been able to serve as many clients as we have, and we are excited for the future of Skye Mason Photography, 3. What did you learn about yourself and your support system during this process and how did you grow professionally? Owning a business has allowed me to understand that people will support you when you are confident in yourself and your business. We have had a tremendous amount of support from close friends and family. I have grown in making connections with others and understanding that I can not do everything myself. 4. What is your specialty or niche? We specialize in Weddings, Portraits, and Business Branding. We aim to be your lifetime photographers. We want to grow with you. We also want to ensure you have beautiful artwork that you can cherish for years to come. 5. What is the meaning behind your business name? We chose Skye Mason Photography after our only daughter Skye. 6. What are the best & most challenging parts of being an entrepreneur, specifically working with your spouse? The best part about working with my spouse is that we built this business together. It has been a fantastic addition to our lives, and we are so grateful for the opportunities Skye Mason Photography has provided us. What has been most challenging is that sometimes our visions don’t align, impacting our business. Just like in marriage, we have learned the art of compromise :) 7. Where do you see your business in 5 years? In five years, we will have expanded our photography business to other ventures and will be educators in the photography field. 8. Tell me about your most recent business win. Our most recent business win stems from our revamped client experience, which we're incredibly excited about. By listening attentively to our clients' feedback and refining our services, we've elevated every aspect of their interaction with our company. 9. Please share any upcoming events or programs you will be participating in or any special offerings for new clients. We just opened booking for Spring Family Photos and Graduation Sessions! |
