It's World Doula Week and I am thrilled about all of the beautiful new things coming to the Triangle this year! I've been a part of the birth world for nearly a decade now and I have seen so much growth and expansion regarding resources and support for families. But what is coming has me so excited and the community will benefit greatly from these amazing additions! You may or may not know the history about birth centers here in Raleigh and surrounding cities. We have had a few free-standing birth centers and unfortunately, they came and went. Baby+Co (Cary) and Women's Birth and Wellness Center (Chapel Hill) and Magnolia Birth Center Midwifery and Women's Health (Greensboro) have all closed in recent years leaving many mothers and families with limited options for birth outside of a hospital setting. And while it can be daunting to give birth in a hospital (especially as a first time mom), having the option to birth at a birth center or even at home can have a profound impact on birth outcomes and overall experiences. With three new birth center opening this year, I anticipate supporting many more families and making more community relationships. Read the latest on the new birth centers below.
North Carolina Birth Center Construction has begun at the North Carolina Birth Center! An opening date has not been announced yet, but it could be open for business this Fall. The owners are still searching for a Director of Midwives and Office Manager. If you are interested in giving birth at NCBC, employment or learning more about the center, please visit www.northcarolinabirthcenter.com. Haven Women's Health and Birth Center A brand-new women's clinic and birth center will open in early April in Cary. Certified Nurse Midwife, Sarah Fawson has been working tirelessly for several months to prepare to bring this much-needed resource to the community. Haven Women's Health and Birth Center is currently offering tours and is accepting new patients. They are also hiring for several positions. Learn more at havenhealthandbirth.com. Aya Birth & Community Wellness Aya Wellness NC is now in Phase I of offering services to the Triangle Community through its Open Access Maternity Clinic in Durham. The clinic is open to anyone seeking affordable prenatal, postpartum and newborn care. A sliding scale payment system is available for those who are uninsured, underinsured, and/or undocumented who desire midwifery care with birth in the hospital setting (Duke Regional). Please note: Labor support is not yet available by the Sankofa Birth team and Medicaid is currently the only accepted insurance plan. For more information or to inquire about services, please send an email to [email protected] or visit www.ayawellness.org. Stay tuned for more birth center updates!

This week's guest blogger is wife, mom, educator and visionary, Elana Mason. She is one half of the photography team for Skye Mason Photography. I connected with Elana last year after following her and quickly becoming a fan of Skye Mason Photography's artistry. They are deeply family-oriented and have such an ability to capture the true essence and emotion of the moment for each of their clients. This is why they are my preferred local photographers. I'm excited to share more about Elana and her business in the interview below. 1. Tell me about yourself.
I'm a kind, patient, and outgoing person, blessed to share my life with my college sweetheart, Roderick, and our four incredible children. As an educator and co-owner of Skye Mason Photography, I find joy in nurturing young minds and capturing life's precious moments. My passion lies in building meaningful relationships and offering support to others, making a positive impact wherever I go. 2. How/why did you start Skye Mason Photography? Roderick and I started nearly seven years ago because, after our wedding, we realized the importance of quality photos. The person we hired was an amateur, which became our only regret from our big day. Had we been properly educated on the importance of hiring a professional, we definitely would have gone a different route. After this, we developed an appreciation for beautiful images and capturing moments that can never be replicated. Over time, we learned and practiced taking photos and developed Skye Mason Photography. Creating a company together has always been one of our many dreams, so we are fortunate that we have been able to serve as many clients as we have, and we are excited for the future of Skye Mason Photography, 3. What did you learn about yourself and your support system during this process and how did you grow professionally? Owning a business has allowed me to understand that people will support you when you are confident in yourself and your business. We have had a tremendous amount of support from close friends and family. I have grown in making connections with others and understanding that I can not do everything myself. 4. What is your specialty or niche? We specialize in Weddings, Portraits, and Business Branding. We aim to be your lifetime photographers. We want to grow with you. We also want to ensure you have beautiful artwork that you can cherish for years to come. 5. What is the meaning behind your business name? We chose Skye Mason Photography after our only daughter Skye. 6. What are the best & most challenging parts of being an entrepreneur, specifically working with your spouse? The best part about working with my spouse is that we built this business together. It has been a fantastic addition to our lives, and we are so grateful for the opportunities Skye Mason Photography has provided us. What has been most challenging is that sometimes our visions don’t align, impacting our business. Just like in marriage, we have learned the art of compromise :) 7. Where do you see your business in 5 years? In five years, we will have expanded our photography business to other ventures and will be educators in the photography field. 8. Tell me about your most recent business win. Our most recent business win stems from our revamped client experience, which we're incredibly excited about. By listening attentively to our clients' feedback and refining our services, we've elevated every aspect of their interaction with our company. 9. Please share any upcoming events or programs you will be participating in or any special offerings for new clients. We just opened booking for Spring Family Photos and Graduation Sessions! This week's guest blogger is a woman of many talents. Brittany Turner is a mother, chef, culinary professor and an amazing singer! I first connected with Brittany after hearing about the birth of her rainbow baby on the news in 2021. As a postpartum nutrition specialist and daughter of a chef and pastry chef, it has been a joy for me to watch Brittany flourish as a culinary entrepreneur in just a short time. I am excited to share more about her and her journey in the interview below. 1. Tell me about yourself.
Thank you for having me. I am Chef Brittany. I am a mom first to three handsome boys who are also my taste testers for new recipes. I am a culinary professor, private chef and founder of Sprouts and Spice Agricultural Academy. 2. How/why did you start Sprouts and Spice Agricultural Academy? I started Sprouts and Spice Agricultural Academy because I saw there was a great need for our community to learn and understand agriculture, culinary arts and nutrition. When we look at the statistics and study the facts surrounding heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure, all of these diseases are usually directly correlated with the food that we consume. In the African American community we are 40 to 50 percent more likely to be living with one or more of these diseases. So I thought the best way to tackle and dismantle this statistic is by teaching the next generation what nutrition looks like and giving them the skills and techniques to become food change makers. We aim to teach middle school and high school students a seed to table curriculum that encompasses the entire food cycle. We are currently in the pilot and research stage of development, to provide fully immersive classes that teach agriculture, cooking, and nutrition. 3. What is the mission or main focus of Sprouts and Spice Academy? At Sprouts & Spice Academy, our mission is to sow the seeds of knowledge, nurturing the connection between 5th-12th youth and the origins of their food. Through hands-on gardening and culinary classes, we cultivate curiosity, inspire passion, and instill values of environmental stewardship in urban and underserved communities. We envision a future where every child, regardless of their background, becomes a changemaker in our food system. 4. Tell me more about your position at Johnston Community College. I currently teach part-time fun cooking classes a few times throughout the month. So anyone 18 or older can sign up. I will also host a Sprouts culinary summer camp in July for ages 10-17. In the fall I will also teach for the 2-year culinary degree program. 5. What are the best & most challenging parts of being an entrepreneur and professor? I think the best part is first being able to create something from nothing and being able to cultivate an idea into a business. I love being in a creative space and creating something new. I enjoy managing my own time and schedule. I believe the most challenging part is figuring out new ways to market and attract new customers. Social media has become the new way for people to connect especially since the pandemic, so figuring out how to market your services to your target audience in this new age is the most challenging part. 6. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I see myself building and expanding Sprouts & Spice Academy. Sprouts & Spice will soon transform into an online academy. Which will consist of an interactive platform for schools, and organizations to use to teach nutrition, agriculture and culinary arts. I am looking forward to developing the platform and integrations so that all students have access to our curriculum. 7. Who do you look up to or admire in the culinary community? To be truthfully honest, I love learning from a variety of chefs. I watch a lot of Gordon Ramsey techniques and Emeril was one of my favorite shows to watch as a kid. I stay in tune with the latest culinary trends by tutorials and YouTube videos from different chefs from all around the country. I also love following inspirational business stories in my field like” Pinky Cole”. I pull from many different mediums in the culinary community. 8. Tell me about your most recent business win. I am piloting our classes with the City of Raleigh so we are excited about that. Being able to collect feedback and research from students and parents is so vital to the success of our business. 9. Please share any upcoming events or programs you will be participating in or any special offerings for new clients. Schools, organizations and groups can sign up to experience our Sprouts & Spice classes on our website. We have some special events coming up this spring/summer that we will post on our website once dates are finalized. |
